Grants for female artists

Like everyone in the music biz, mixers and producers have a reverence for the giants whose shoulders they stand on. We love to learn from the greats and, in this book, journalist and engineer Howard Massey sits down with 37 of them to record their hard-won insights. From Sir George Martin to Phil Ramone to Alan Parsons, we’re treated to intimate insights into how these producers makes great records and what makes each of them tick. Many of the common lessons here we knew already — such as the importance of getting the best performance over fixing things during the mixing process — but there’s real value in the way that these sentiments and lessons are articulated differently by each interviewee.

I started to experiment with some of the horn samples in the pack and, though I didn’t end up using any, they gave me the idea to feature a trumpet player. I immediately thought of my friend and frequent collaborator, Jake Baldwin. I met Jake in Boston in 2010 while I was at Berklee and he was down the street studying at NEC. We started making music together right away in our New York-based hip-hop collective, Tiger Speak, but in recent years, we’ve both relocated to other cities.

Lastly, for the television-savvy listener, the sort-of-famous theme music to the sort-of-famous ’90s sitcom, Doogie Howser, M.D. (written by Mike Post) can also serve as a handy reminder of the descending octave interval. Bop along with the synth at 0:00.

Lastly, check out how the beat here often delays how it enters. In the first verse, it’s delayed by four bars, the chorus has a little hiccup in bar two, and the V2 delays by two bars. It’s a creative technique.

A narrative also plays a huge factor in the press you get as a musician. Blogs, magazines, and freelance writers/interviewers are all in the business of sharing stories. Sure, they’ll review your music, but what they really need for a successful article is some kind of hook. And if you can approach them with a well-crafted and interesting story all ready to go, you’re going to stand out from all the other artists who approach them with pleas to cover their new music.

One of this blog’s most prominent features is the “10 Songs You Need To Hear This Week” which features everyone from YAWNS to Lil Lotus, Cold Hart, Yung Scuff, and more — always aiming to highlight underground artists. Underground Underdogs also does artist features and introspective pieces like “An Insight Into the Experimental Sounds of Cremation Lily” or interviews with artists about their story and success. If you’re a big enough fan you can grab a t-shirt or hoodie and support them.

Electric guitars are a bit more complicated. There are more parts involved when recording this instrument, such as the amplifier, the speaker cabinet, and any effects pedals — all in addition to the guitar, itself. Because of this, we’re going to focus mainly on recording electric guitars for this article.

Sammy Hakim is an up-and-coming young songwriter based in New York City. In May, 2018 she graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Major in songwriting and a focus in music business. These days she spends most of her time in songwriting sessions with artists all over the country.

Improvising on an instrument isn’t hard once you have a level of technical fluency. You can play whatever notes you want in whatever order you want to play them, with whatever tone and attack. Scratching is more limited. The music in the recording is set already, it’s in the order that it’s in, and it sounds how it sounds. Any expressive moves you make have to make sense in relation to what’s happening in the recording.
